This is Japan’s longest-running ranking of hotels and ryokan.
There are approximately 40,000 ryokan in Japan.
Each year, the “Top 100 Ryokan” are selected based on a survey of approximately 14,000 travel agencies throughout Japan.
In recent years, overseas travel agencies have also organized tours featuring stays at properties selected for the Top 100 Ryokan, helping introduce travelers from around the world to the distinctive appeal of hot-spring ryokan—an experience quite different from staying at city hotels in Tokyo or Osaka.
The ranking recognizes 100 properties in each of four categories—Hospitality, Cuisine, Facilities such as guest rooms and large communal baths, and Planning & Entertainment such as in-house events and seasonal presentations—as well as in the Overall category, which evaluates the complete guest experience.
The ryokan selected for the Top 100 create a variety of thoughtful experiences and warm welcomes every day, designed either to delight guests or help them relax and unwind.
It is truly a world where “RYOKAN IS WONDERLAND.”
